Maternal Mortality Trends in Mexico: State Differences
Celia Hubert, University of Texas at Austin
This study examines trajectories in the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) at the state level in Mexico. Using the historical time series of MMR by state provided by the Mexican National Health Information System we observe state MMRs trends from 1990 to 2010. Although we find a declining trend over this period, the actual decline has been slower than the expected decline. As a result, it is very likely that the Millennium goal regarding maternal mortality won’t be attained. These results points out the need to use state-level covariates to develop a better understanding of the MMR trajectories by state.
